Keep cool with a well maintained AC system in your car.

Couple driving in an air conditioned car.

A properly working air conditioning system is essential for keeping your car comfortable for you and your passengers.

Regular servicing will ensure that your car’s air conditioning system (AC) remains in top working order all year round. BestDrive has authorised technicians who can service your AC system and re-gas it as required.

How does a car air conditioner work?

The AC system in your car operates similarly to the cooling system for the engine. It is made up of many components, which work together to keep you, and your passengers, cool in the warmer months, remove humidity from the cabin and demist a foggy windscreen in cooler weather.
When one or more of these components fails or isn’t working as well as it should, your AC system will be compromised.
Your car’s AC system is comprised of three main parts:
  • Conditioning Compressor - the AC system is filled with a refrigerant which is compressed and turned into gas. This process increases the temperature of the gas, which then needs to be cooled.
  • Condenser - located in front of the radiator the condenser cools the gas and returns it to liquid form. The gas moves through an expansion valve into the cabin of the car.
  • Evaporator - as the gas flows through piping into the passenger compartment, the evaporator transfers the extreme cold of the gas to the air that is flowing through the evaporator and into the cabin. This is how you and your passengers are able to stay nice and cool.

How often should I service my car’s AC?

Manufacturers recommend that you service your car’s AC system every two years. This ensures reliable and consistent performance all year round. Your local BestDrive store has authorised technicians who can provide you with a comprehensive service of your car’s AC system to keep it in top condition.
As part of your regular vehicle servicing, obvious faults will be checked for, which can be an indication of a faulty AC system. These include drive belt tension and visible signs of refrigerant leaks. However, your AC system should be treated the same as any other aspect of your car in order to avoid potential problems that may otherwise go unnoticed. This is why it is good practice to have a comprehensive air conditioning service at the recommended intervals.
Regular servicing of your car’s AC system will ensure your comfort and that of your passengers. It can even save you money in the long term. A well serviced AC system requires less fuel to operate. When there is a leak in your AC system, it begins to work harder, which increases the amount of fuel used.

What can go wrong with your car’s AC system?

AC systems are susceptible to leaks, which results in a gradual deterioration in the performance of your vehicle’s AC system. Over a period of time, AC gases are prone to escape. This can be caused by engine vibrations and temperature changes, which cause pipes to move and the rubber rings to expand and contract, which enables leaking.
This kind of leakage is more likely to occur in winter, when the AC system is rarely used, allowing the O-ring seals to dry out. Regularly running your car’s AC system throughout the cooler months can help to maintain the system. Even five minutes per week can help keep the seals lubricated.

What is Car AC regassing?

If you find that your AC system is not blowing as cool as it should, this can be an indication that it needs to be regassed.
Having your AC system regassed involves the removal of the old refrigerant gas from your AC unit, which is then replaced with new refrigerant so that your AC system can run cold again.
You should always have your AC system regassed by a qualified professional.
If you’ve noticed that your AC system is no longer cooling the passenger area of your vehicle as it should, or you can’t recall when you last had your AC system serviced, call the experts at your local BestDrive store to arrange a service.
Our qualified technicians can perform a series of checks, balances, repairs and replacements, as required, to ensure that your car’s AC system is running effectively, keeping you both cool and comfortable.
