Avoid Unnecessary Tyre Damage

How often do you use your vehicle?

While the answer to this question is highly individualised, regardless of how often you do or don’t use your vehicle, the fact remains that all car owners need to take appropriate care of their tyres. Well maintained tyres will enhance vehicle safety and tyre longevity.
It’s important to adequately care for, and maintain your tyres to prevent unnecessary tyre damage or premature tyre replacement. Here are some things that you can do to ensure that your car tyres are well looked after.

Maintain Recommended Tyre Pressures

When you drive on tyres that are inflated to their recommended pressures you help to ensure that tyre life is prolonged, handling performance is increased, braking safety is enhanced and fuel economy is maximused. To experience these benefits you need to check your tyre pressures once a month.
To read your tyre pressures you will need to:
  • Locate the recommended tyre pressures in your owner’s manual, or on the vehicle placard, which is typically located in the driver’s door jamb
  • Use a quality tyre pressure gauge to check the pressure of each tyre, including the spare tyre if you have one
  • Check your tyre pressures when the tyres are cold, which means that the car has been parked for a minimum of 3 hours or driven at a moderate speed for no more than approximately 1.5 kilometres
  • Adjust tyre pressures if needed and then check the pressure again to ensure it has been adequately inflated

Ensure your Tyres are Rotated and Balanced

Even if you can’t see any visible evidence of uneven tyre wear, it’s a good idea to maintain regular tyre rotation and wheel balancing services. Tyres should be rotated every 10,000 kilometres, or according to your vehicle manufacturer’s specifications. Your vehicle will also require a wheel alignment approximately every 10,000 kilometres as well as whenever you have new tyres fitted.
Regular tyre rotations greatly assist in promoting good tyre life by putting tyres in different wheel positions, which assists in achieving even tyre wear. A wheel balancing service involves placing tyre weights onto each tyre to ensure an even distribution of weight around each tyre. It helps to prolong the life of your tyres, improve performance and enhance vehicle safety.
BestDrive recommends combining your tyre rotation and wheel balancing services to ensure the benefits of both are maximised. It is important to be aware that there are also other instances when your vehicle may require a tyre rotation of wheel balance, including experiencing a shuddering steering wheel or feeling as though your vehicle is pulling to one side. When unsure, contact your local BestDrive store for assistance.

Choose the Right Size Tyre for Your Vehicle

It may sound strange to make a point of this, however, fitting your vehicle with the right size tyres in the first place is extremely important. When buying new tyres, knowing the size of your current tyres will help to ensure that you replace your old tyres with new tyres of the correct size.
The good news is that tyre sizes are globally standardised and the information you require can be found right on the sidewall of your tyres. Tyre size is moulded into the tyre sidewall and is represented as a series of numbers that are separated by slashes or letters. For example, 205/65 R15.
You will also find information about the recommended tyre sizes for the specific make and model of your vehicle in the owner’s manual. These recommendations are based on a vehicle that has factory suspension and is used in a typical manner. Highly modified vehicles, or vehicles that see special use may benefit from changing to a different tyre size.
If you require assistance with reading your tyre size, contact your local BestDrive store. Our knowledgeable team is ready to assist you with buying new tyres and will work with you to find the best tyre for your vehicle.
